Manto (2018)
In Bombay's seedy-shiny film world, Manto and his stories are widely read and accepted. But as sectarian violence engulfs the nation, Manto makes the difficult choice of leaving his beloved Bombay. In Lahore, he finds himself bereft of friends and unable to find takers for his writings.
What people think about Manto
Manto is special because it doesn’t just “biopic” a great writer—it lets you feel the electric danger of ideas in a world that wants them tamed, pairing Saadat Hasan Manto’s life with the bite and sting of his own stories. Nawazuddin Siddiqui gives a phenomenal, lived-in performance that makes Manto’s wit, stubbornness, and bruised humanity impossible to forget, while Nandita Das directs with a steady compassion that keeps the film poignant rather than preachy. The vibe is intimate and haunting, moving through smoky cafés, literary circles, and a nation cracking under Partition’s pressure, always attentive to the cost of cruelty on ordinary people. It’s not a crowd-pleaser in the escapist sense—this is a sober, compelling drama—but if you want cinema that lingers in the mind and respects your intelligence, Manto is absolutely worth your time.
Manto is clearly aiming to be a dignified, literary portrait of a fearless writer caught in the churn of Partition, and it treats its subject with real respect. The problem is that the film can feel a bit too polite and explanatory for someone whose work was anything but, leaning into talky, expository scenes that slow the momentum. Its structure—threading in short stories—adds texture, but it also blurs the emotional through-line, especially in the first half where the pacing can drag. If you want a propulsive biopic or don’t already have some curiosity about Manto and the era, this may test your patience, but if you’re in the mood for measured performances and historical atmosphere, it has undeniable seriousness and craft.
