Buffalo Boys (2018)

Buffalo Boys is special because it fuses two mythic traditions—the dust-and-steel swagger of the American Western and the righteous fury of an anti-colonial revenge saga—into something that feels both fresh and lovingly handcrafted. Mike Wiluan stages action with a storyteller’s clarity and a stunt team’s precision, letting gunfire, blades, and bruising martial arts land with real weight amid striking, sun-baked visuals and polished period detail. The performances anchor the spectacle with grit and purpose, so the film plays less like empty mayhem and more like a pulpy, passionate fight for dignity. Fair warning: it’s intensely violent and proudly old-school in its crowd-pleasing vengeance vibe, but if you want a lean, stylish action-drama that knows exactly what it is, this one earns your time.

Buffalo Boys is clearly aiming for a pulpy, crowd-pleasing mash-up of Indonesian anti-colonial revenge drama and Wild West swagger, with martial-arts gunfights doing most of the talking. The problem is the talking parts: the story is familiar, the characters are sketched rather than explored, and the pacing and editing can make the dramatic beats feel choppy or oddly rushed. The action is frequently energetic and bloody enough to satisfy genre fans, but inconsistent CGI and clumsy transitions can pull you out right when it needs to land emotionally. If you want a deeper historical drama or tightly written character work, this will likely frustrate you; if you’re here mainly for stylish, violent set pieces and don’t mind a thin plot, it’s a serviceable ride.
