The Marksman (2021)
Jim Hanson’s quiet life is suddenly disturbed by two people crossing the US/Mexico border – a woman and her young son – desperate to flee a Mexican cartel. After a shootout leaves the mother dead, Jim becomes the boy’s reluctant defender. He embraces his role as Miguel’s protector and will stop at nothing to get him to safety, as they go on the run from the relentless assassins.
What people think about The Marksman
The Marksman works because it leans into the kind of old-fashioned, dust-on-the-boots thriller Hollywood doesn’t make enough anymore: a straightforward chase story with a bruised heart at its center, anchored by Liam Neeson’s quietly commanding presence. It’s less about flashy set pieces than the steady, tightening pressure of doing the right thing when it would be easier to look away, and the wide-open Southwest scenery gives the film a rugged, melancholy atmosphere. Yes, you can see some turns coming, but the movie knows that predictability isn’t a sin when the pacing is strong, the stakes feel human, and the emotions land. If you’re in the mood for a solid, bittersweet popcorn ride with a dependable star and a protective-guardian vibe, this one delivers.
The Marksman is clearly trying to be a straightforward, old-school protector thriller with Liam Neeson as a worn-down man doing the right thing when no one else will. The problem is it plays almost entirely on autopilot: the plot hits familiar beats, the villains feel generic, and the action is serviceable rather than tense or inventive, so suspense rarely builds. Neeson brings a bit of weary decency that keeps it watchable, and there are a few grounded, human moments, but if you’re hoping for sharp thrills, surprises, or a fresh take on the formula, this one will likely feel thin and forgettable. If you just want a simple, low-demand chase movie to half-watch, it might do the job.
