The Girl in the Fog (2017)

The Girl in the Fog earns its chills the old-fashioned way: with a creeping, gothic atmosphere that makes you feel the cold air of its mountain village and the weight of every unanswered question. Donato Carrisi stages the investigation like a chess match between truth, perception, and the media circus that swirls around tragedy, and the suspense tightens not through cheap shocks but through steadily accumulating unease. Toni Servillo is terrific as Agent Vogel—charismatic, calculating, and just slippery enough to keep you leaning forward—while Jean Reno brings a grounded gravity that deepens the mystery’s moral fog. If you want a thriller that’s more about dread, misdirection, and human motives than action beats, this one lingers in the mind; if you prefer clean answers and a brisk, procedural pace, its deliberate chill may not be for you.

The Girl in the Fog is clearly aiming for a slick, media-savvy mystery where perception becomes part of the crime, and Toni Servillo leans into that with a nicely controlled, slippery performance. The problem is the story keeps trying to outsmart you with twists and “one more time” endings that start to feel engineered rather than earned, so tension can turn into eye-rolling if you like your thrillers grounded and believable. If you enjoy glossy European procedurals, moody mountain atmospheres, and puzzle-box plotting even when it’s a bit contrived, you’ll probably have a decent time. But if predictability and twist-for-twist’s-sake storytelling drive you mad, this one may test your patience more than it chills you.
