Palmer (2021)

Palmer is special because it takes a familiar redemption setup and makes it feel lived-in, tender, and quietly disarming—less about grand gestures than the daily work of becoming someone better. Justin Timberlake gives Eddie Palmer a worn, believable edge, and Ryder Allen is terrific as Sam, whose confidence and vulnerability bring real spark to every scene they share; together they create the kind of bond that sneaks up on you and then hits hard. Fisher Stevens keeps the tone grounded and humane, finding warmth and small humor without dodging the rougher corners of addiction, judgment, and second chances. It’s an earnest, emotional drama that wears its heart on its sleeve, and if you’re allergic to tearjerkers or stories that lean into sentiment, it may not be your thing—but if you want a film that leaves you feeling a little more hopeful about people, it’s worth the time.

Palmer is aiming for a warm, redemption-and-found-family drama, and you can feel it working hard to earn your tears with a rough-around-the-edges ex-con learning to show up for a kid. The problem is it’s built from very familiar parts, so a lot of the turns feel prepackaged and “inspirational” rather than truly surprising or lived-in, which can make the emotional beats land a bit too neatly. If you’re allergic to safe, sentimental storytelling that nudges you toward the obvious lesson, this will probably feel manipulative and predictable. Still, Justin Timberlake is steady, Ryder Allen is genuinely affecting, and if you want a straightforward, soft-edged tearjerker with some heavier subject matter (including domestic abuse and addiction), it may do the job.
