Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen share the kind of lived-in chemistry you can’t fake, turning wine-night banter into something that feels both laugh-out-loud funny and quietly tender. The vibe is breezy and warm—more grown-up sitcom sparkle than raunch-fest—yet it isn’t afraid to wink at desire, aging, and the courage it takes to rewrite your own story. If PG-13 sex talk and cheeky innuendo aren’t your thing it may not be for you, but if you want a smart, affectionate romp with real heart, this one goes down easy.

Book Club wants to be a warm, cheeky celebration of older women reclaiming desire and shaking up routines, and you can feel the cast gamefully leaning into that mission. The problem is the movie often settles for sitcom-level setups, predictable romantic beats, and “naughty book” jokes that feel safer and more dated than the premise promises. If you’re expecting sharp writing or something as bold as its Fifty Shades hook, you may find it pretty creaky and oddly tame for how much it talks about sex. Still, if you just want an easy, wine-night crowd-pleaser with likable stars and a generally upbeat tone, it delivers enough charm to coast.
