Elizabeth Harvest (2018)
The newly married Elizabeth arrives with her new husband, the scientist Henry, at a magnificent house. He tells her that she can do there anything she pleases, except to enter a certain closed room.
What people think about Elizabeth Harvest
Elizabeth Harvest is the kind of sleek, gothic sci-fi thriller that feels like a dark fairy tale told in candlelight: a grand house, a newlywed promise, and one forbidden door that practically hums with dread. Sebastian Gutierrez stages the story with immaculate style and a slow, seductive atmosphere, letting each new detail click into place with the satisfying precision of a well-made nightmare. Abbey Lee is mesmerizing as a heroine who’s more than a victim, while Ciarán Hinds and Carla Gugino bring an icy intelligence that keeps every conversation vibrating with menace and meaning. It’s erotic, violent, and intentionally unsettling, so it won’t be for everyone—but if you like your mysteries moody, your revelations carefully rationed, and your horror dressed in elegant design, this one lingers.
Elizabeth Harvest wants to be a sleek, gothic sci-fi chamber piece about obsession, control, and the price of playing god, and for a while the premise and mansion atmosphere genuinely pull you in. The problem is it starts promising mystery and then gradually swaps tension for explanation, with a second half that can feel like it’s stopping to read you the rulebook instead of letting the story land. If you’re allergic to slow pacing, plot convolution, and twists that get less satisfying the more they’re clarified, this will test your patience. Still, Abbey Lee and Ciarán Hinds bring a chilly commitment, and if you like stylish, talky thrillers with unsettling sexual and violent content, you may enjoy it as a mood piece more than a mind-blower.
