Benediction (2021)

Benediction is the rare historical drama that feels like a poem you can live inside—elegant, aching, and quietly electric in the way it turns memory into cinema. Terence Davies films Siegfried Sassoon’s postwar life with a painter’s eye and a moralist’s tenderness, capturing the glow of London’s literary circles and the lingering shadow of the trenches without resorting to easy speeches or tidy catharsis. The performances are so finely tuned they seem to breathe between the lines, letting desire, faith, shame, and defiance register in glances as much as words. It’s a melancholic, contemplative film that asks for patience rather than adrenaline, but if you’re open to something beautiful and deeply affecting, it will stay with you like a line of verse you can’t shake.

Benediction is clearly aiming for an elegant, reflective portrait of Siegfried Sassoon—his war trauma, his public dissent, and the private cost of living as a gay man in his era. The problem is it often feels more like a series of curated scenes than a story with momentum, jumping around in a way that can come off disjointed, slow, and oddly emotionally distant. If you want a focused war drama or a tightly structured biopic with a clear through-line, this may feel ponderous and a bit messy, like a missed opportunity. That said, if you’re patient with arthouse pacing and enjoy period atmosphere, literary circles, and performance-driven vignettes, there’s craftsmanship here to appreciate even when it doesn’t fully cohere.
