Glass (2019)

Glass is special because it treats the superhero idea like a psychological thriller, turning capes and origin myths into something tense, intimate, and oddly plausible. M. Night Shyamalan builds a moody, comic-book-inflected world where the real spectacle isn’t explosions but the slow tightening of control, doubt, and belief—anchored by James McAvoy’s electric volatility, Samuel L. Jackson’s silky menace, and Bruce Willis’s weary decency. The vibe is eerie and talky in the best way, with bursts of brutal physicality that feel earned rather than flashy, and an ambition that swings for something stranger than standard franchise comfort food. It won’t be for everyone if you want a clean, crowd-pleasing superhero payoff, but if you’re on the fence and crave originality, performances, and big ideas delivered with a pulpy chill, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

Glass is clearly trying to be a grounded, “real-world” capstone to Unbreakable and Split, mashing comic-book mythology with psychiatric skepticism and a slow-burn conspiracy angle. The problem is it often feels more like a talky holding pattern than a thriller, with pacing that drags and plot turns that can come off muddled instead of mind-blowing. McAvoy remains the main event and Shyamalan still has flashes of eerie atmosphere, but if you’re expecting a clean, cathartic showdown and a tightly woven finale, this may feel undercooked and oddly deflating. Watch it if you’re invested in the trilogy’s themes and characters; skip it if you want momentum, clarity, and a payoff that lands with a satisfying thud rather than a confusing shrug.
