The Ledge (2022)

The Ledge grabs you by the fingertips and doesn’t let go, using sheer vertical space and real-feeling rock climbing to turn survival into something you can practically feel in your palms. Brittany Ashworth is terrific as Kelly, a grounded, resourceful heroine whose fear and grit read as painfully human rather than movie-tough, and the film’s tension comes as much from the mountain’s unforgiving face as from the people hunting her. Director Howard J. Ford keeps the vibe lean and breathless—part outdoor adventure, part cat-and-mouse thriller—so even quiet moments hum with dread. It is, however, a hard R with brutal violence and a sexual assault attempt, so it’s not for everyone, but if you can handle the intensity, it’s a smart, nerve-racking ride with a genuinely strong lead at its center.

The Ledge is clearly aiming for a stripped-down, white-knuckle survival thriller where a single piece of evidence turns a climbing trip into a desperate fight to stay alive. It does deliver some tense cliffside peril and the setting does a lot of the heavy lifting, but the movie leans hard on familiar thriller beats, clunky dialogue, and performances that can feel a bit pushed, which makes the danger less believable than it wants to be. The villains are written more as noisy plot-movers than genuinely frightening people, so the cat-and-mouse often feels predictable instead of nerve-shredding. Also, the content is harsh—attempted sexual assault, graphic violence, and slurs—so if you’re not up for grim material in service of a fairly conventional chase story, this is an easy skip.
