The Vast of Night (2019)
At the dawn of the space-race, two radio-obsessed teens discover a strange frequency over the airwaves in what becomes the most important night of their lives and in the history of their small town.
What people think about The Vast of Night
The Vast of Night feels like a minor miracle: a UFO mystery that doesn’t try to outgun bigger films with spectacle, but instead hypnotizes you with pure craft—gliding camera work, crackling sound design, and the kind of small-town atmosphere you can practically smell through the screen. Set in the hush of 1950s New Mexico, it follows two sharp, radio-obsessed teens (Sierra McCormick and Jake Horowitz, both terrific) as an eerie signal turns an ordinary night shift into a communal fever dream, where every voice on the line might be a clue or a warning. Director Andrew Patterson builds tension the old-fashioned way—through talk, silence, and the unsettling poetry of unseen things—so the movie plays like a late-night broadcast you can’t stop listening to. If you want constant action or definitive answers, it may test your patience, but if you like slow-burn thrillers that trust your imagination, it’s an absolute must.
The Vast of Night is clearly trying to be a throwback Twilight Zone-style mystery: small-town 1950s vibes, radio chatter, and a slow-building “what is that sound?” dread. When it works, it’s because of the confident atmosphere, sharp sound design, and two likable leads who sell the urgency with very little spectacle. But if you’re expecting a big sci-fi thriller with constant twists or clear answers, this is a modest, talky movie that leans hard on long conversations and slow pacing, and the story can feel familiar rather than revelatory. Watch it if you enjoy mood, craft, and suspense built from voices and silence; skip it if you need plot density, scale, or a more conventional payoff.
