Coming 2 America (2021)

Coming 2 America is the kind of sequel that understands its assignment: bring you back to Zamunda with a grin on your face, then keep you there with sheer comic momentum and a warm, celebratory spirit. Eddie Murphy slips into Akeem like no time has passed, and watching him and Arsenio Hall riff again—often while juggling multiple characters—gives the movie that old-school, crowd-pleasing bounce that comedies rarely aim for anymore. Craig Brewer stages it all in a candy-colored swirl of lavish costumes, palace splendor, and Queens-to-royalty culture clash, so even when the jokes are broad, the movie feels rich and alive. It’s more of a nostalgic party than a razor-sharp reinvention, and a few story choices may not work for everyone, but if you want an easy, affectionate comedy with a game ensemble and plenty of “remember this?” joy, it delivers.

Coming 2 America is clearly trying to bottle the warm, fish-out-of-water charm of the original while giving Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall another victory lap of characters, costumes, and crowd-pleasing nostalgia. The problem is it leans so hard on callbacks and recycled bits that the story feels prepackaged and the comedy hits in patches rather than consistently, with a softer, more sentimental tone replacing the sharper satire people loved. If you’re hoping for a bold, fresh sequel with new comedic ideas, this will likely feel safe, predictable, and a little too eager to remind you of a better movie. But if you just want a comfortable reunion with familiar faces, some lively performances, and a few genuinely fun moments in Zamunda, it can still be an easy watch.
