Bad Genius (2017)

Bad Genius turns something as ordinary as a test into a full-blown, edge-of-your-seat caper, and it does it with such precision you’ll wonder why more thrillers don’t look like this. Nattawut Poonpiriya directs with a magician’s control—tight, witty, and constantly escalating—while the editing snaps like a metronome, making every glance, pause, and pencil stroke feel loaded. Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying is terrific as Lynn, balancing cool intelligence with the creeping weight of consequences, and the film’s sly humor keeps the tension from turning grim. If you need your dramas to be quiet and contemplative, this might feel too propulsive, but if you like smart, suspenseful movies that make you lean forward in your seat, it’s a blast.

Bad Genius is aiming to be a slick, high-tension “heist movie” set in exam halls, and it largely succeeds on pure momentum, clever set-pieces, and a strong central performance from Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying. Where it may lose you is if you’re hoping for a deeper takedown of privilege, schooling, and standardized testing—the film gestures at big ideas but often chooses adrenaline over real bite. The tone can also feel a bit scrubbed and crowd-pleasing for a story about corruption, and the ending leaves some viewers feeling it wraps things up more neatly than the moral mess deserves. If you want a sharp social thriller with teeth, you might find it frustrating; if you want an entertaining, fast-moving crime caper with minimal heaviness, it’s an easy watch.
