Hillbilly Elegy (2020)

Hillbilly Elegy is at its best as a bruised, intimate family portrait that refuses to tidy up the mess—Ron Howard frames one young man’s tug-of-war between ambition and obligation with a plain-spoken sincerity that can sneak up and hit hard. Glenn Close brings flinty, lived-in force to Mamaw, and Amy Adams plays Bev with a raw volatility that makes the love and damage feel inseparable, anchoring the film even as it moves through time. The vibe is urgent and emotionally direct, more about surviving a storm than solving it, and it finds its power in the small, meticulous moments where pride, shame, and hope collide. It’s not for everyone—some will find it heavy and occasionally on-the-nose—but if you can handle intense scenes of addiction and domestic turmoil, it’s a compelling, performance-driven drama that’s hard to shake.

Hillbilly Elegy is clearly aiming for a heartfelt, intergenerational portrait of addiction, poverty, and the push-pull of escaping home while still loving the people in it. The problem is it often plays like a prestige “inspirational struggle” checklist—big emotional blowups, familiar redemption beats, and a tidy framing that can feel more like melodrama than lived-in truth. If you’re sensitive to stories that flatten working-class hardship into stereotypes, or you want a more nuanced, observant take on this world, this may leave you cold despite the heavy subject matter. That said, Glenn Close and Amy Adams commit hard, and if you respond to straightforward, actor-driven family drama with intense domestic scenes, you might still find it watchable.
