What people think about Dogman
Dogman is special because it turns a gritty crime thriller into something unexpectedly tender and tragic, anchored by a performance that feels less “acted” than lived-in. Matteo Garrone builds a salt-stung, crumbling seaside world you can practically smell, then tightens the screws with patient, nerve-jangling tension as one decent, small man is pulled into the orbit of a neighborhood monster. Marcello Fonte makes you root for his quiet dignity so fiercely that every compromise lands with real weight, and the film finds surprising pathos in places most thrillers would only chase shock. Fair warning: the violence is harsh and the mood is bleakly realistic, but if you can handle a dark, human-scale descent with masterful atmosphere, it’s the kind of film that stays in your head long after the credits.
Dogman is clearly aiming for a grim, character-driven tragedy about a meek man being crushed by a bully and a broken community, and in that sense it’s serious, grounded, and intentionally ugly. The problem is it can feel like it’s steering you toward misery with a firm hand—piling on humiliation and bleakness until the violence arrives, then offering more futility than release. If you’re hoping for a punchy crime thriller, a clever revenge payoff, or even a clean moral arc, this will likely leave you cold and slightly used. Still, the performances are strong and the setting is vividly observed, so if you can tolerate severe violence and want a slow, bitter study of power and degradation, it delivers exactly that.
