Marlowe (2023)

Marlowe is a lovingly old-fashioned Los Angeles noir that feels like slipping into a smoky jazz club where every glance has a price and every hallway hides a secret. Liam Neeson brings a weathered gravity to Philip Marlowe—less wisecracking superhero than tired professional with a stubborn moral compass—while Neil Jordan surrounds him with lush period atmosphere, shadowy cinematography, and a supporting cast (Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange) that practically purrs with danger. The movie’s pleasures are tactile: the studios, the clubs, the cigarette haze, the slow-burn tension of a case that keeps widening, even when it shouldn’t. If you want a tightly wound, puzzle-box mystery you might find it a bit knotty, but if you’re on the fence and crave mood, craft, and a classic detective vibe played straight with a wink, this one is an easy invitation.
