The Photographer of Mauthausen (2018)
Spanish photographer Francesc Boix, imprisoned in the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, works in the SS Photographic Service. Between 1943 and 1945, he hides, with the help of other prisoners, thousands of negatives, with the purpose of showing the freed world the atrocities committed by the Nazis, exhaustively documented. He will be a key witness during the Nuremberg Trials.
What people think about The Photographer of Mauthausen
What makes The Photographer of Mauthausen special is the way it turns survival into an act of resistance: not with guns, but with proof. Mar Targarona directs with a vivid, unblinking urgency that feels like a thriller even as it remains grounded in historical horror, and Mario Casas brings a taut, human resolve to Francesc Boix that keeps the film from becoming abstract suffering. The tone is tense, frequently terrifying, and emotionally direct, building a sense of mounting stakes as images become weapons against denial. It’s not an easy watch—concentration camp violence is central—but if you can face its darkness, the film leaves you shaken, moved, and grateful that someone fought to make the world look.
The Photographer of Mauthausen is clearly aiming to honor Francesc Boix’s real-life courage and show how photographic evidence helped expose Nazi crimes, and it does that in a straightforward, watchable way. But it often plays like a conventional wartime thriller, smoothing the rough edges into familiar beats instead of digging as deeply as the subject arguably demands. Some characters feel more like functional pieces than fully lived-in people, and the narrative can wobble between tense “mission” plotting and heavier historical drama without always blending smoothly. If you’re looking for a more challenging, psychologically piercing camp film, this may feel too tidy—though if you want an accessible, respectfully made entry point with a strong central performance and a clear story, it can still be worth your time.
