Acts of Violence (2018)

Acts of Violence is the kind of lean, no-nonsense crime thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go, built around a clear moral fury and a ticking-clock urgency. Brett Donowho keeps the pacing tight and the action cleanly staged, while the Cleveland grit and procedural angles give the story a grounded, street-level bite instead of comic-book swagger. Bruce Willis brings a worn-down steadiness as a cop battling both traffickers and the red tape that protects them, and the film’s simple good-versus-evil spine makes it easy to sink into when you’re in the mood for straightforward justice. It’s not a subtle or especially surprising ride—and the subject matter is undeniably grim—but if you want a slick, well-oiled revenge-and-rescue thriller that moves, it delivers.

Acts of Violence wants to be a gritty, ripped-from-the-headlines rescue thriller with a vigilante edge, using human trafficking and PTSD as the fuel for a fast, righteous manhunt. The problem is it often feels like it’s borrowing heavy subjects for shock value rather than treating them with any real weight, and the action beats play out in a generic, been-there way that’s more noisy than tense. Bruce Willis is more “name on the poster” than driving force, and the movie’s tone can come off tacky when it’s trying to be hard-hitting. If you’re looking for a thoughtful crime thriller or anything remotely nuanced about its themes, skip it; if you just want a blunt, low-to-mid-budget revenge yarn with a couple of competent shootouts, you might tolerate it.
