Shanghai Fortress (2019)

Shanghai Fortress is the kind of sleek, neon-lit sci-fi war movie that aims to sweep you up in spectacle first and ask questions later, and when it clicks, it’s a satisfyingly big-screen ride. The besieged-future Shanghai setting gives the action a striking, high-tech atmosphere, with CGI and effects that do a lot of heavy lifting to sell the scale of an alien siege. Shu Qi brings a welcome human steadiness amid the chaos, grounding the film’s glossy momentum with real presence. It won’t win over viewers craving hard science or airtight plotting, but if you’re on the fence and want an adequately entertaining, “turn your brain off and enjoy the visuals” blockbuster, this one delivers more often than you’d expect.
