Recall (2018)

Recall is the kind of drama that turns a single, horrifying accident into a gripping moral pressure cooker, where truth has to be fought for inch by inch. Katsuhide Motoki frames the story with a tense, procedural momentum, but the real hook is watching Tomoya Nagase’s company president refuse to accept an easy scapegoat narrative as the media, police, and corporate interests close ranks around him. The film’s vibe is sober and propulsive—less melodrama than a steadily tightening vise—while Dean Fujioka and Issey Takahashi add sharp, human counterweights to the institutional chill. It isn’t a light watch, and if you want escapism you may find it too grounded, but if you’re drawn to stories about accountability, courage, and the cost of speaking up, it’s quietly riveting.

Recall wants to be a sober, righteous corporate-crime drama about one man refusing to be the convenient scapegoat, and it does land that “fight the system” urgency when the pressure from police, media, and manufacturers closes in. The downside is it can feel more like a procedural case file than an emotionally rich character piece, with long stretches of meetings, investigations, and finger-pointing that may test your patience if you want momentum or catharsis. Some of the plotting leans on familiar conspiracy beats, so if you’ve seen a few “big company cover-up” stories, you might find the turns a bit predictable. Still, strong, committed performances and a grounded sense of outrage make it worth a look if you like methodical dramas about accountability more than thrills.
