Rust Creek wants to be a gritty, backwoods survival thriller with a smart young woman forced to outthink predators and a corrupt small-town system, and you can feel the intent to keep it grounded rather than flashy. The problem is that the “grounded” approach often reads as underpowered: the pacing drags, the suspense doesn’t consistently tighten, and some character decisions and plot turns ask you to swallow more than a tense thriller should.
