Bluebeard (2017)

Bluebeard is special because it turns a familiar serial-killer setup into something more intimate and unnerving: a thriller where the most dangerous place isn’t a dark alley, but the quiet space between what you think you heard and what you can prove. Director Lee Soo-youn builds a chilly, lived-in atmosphere of suspicion around Cho Jin-woong’s weary doctor, letting dread seep in through small details until every conversation feels like it might have a blade hidden inside it. The suspense is smart and steadily tightening, with a Hitchcockian knack for making you lean forward, second-guess your instincts, and feel the trap closing without the movie needing to shout. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and the intensity doesn’t let up, but if you want a gripping Korean crime thriller that feels refreshingly different, this one earns your nerves.

Bluebeard wants to be a tense, morally murky thriller where an ordinary doctor gets pulled into a grisly mystery and starts doubting everyone around him, including himself. It does build a steady sense of dread and Cho Jin-woong brings a convincingly worn-down, desperate energy, but the story can feel more murky than cleverly twisty, with motivations that don’t always land as sharply as the film seems to think they do. Also, this is not “thriller-lite” in any sense: the violence is harsh and upsetting, with severe gore and intense scenes that can easily overwhelm the plot. If you’re here for a clean, puzzle-box whodunit, you may leave frustrated; if you can handle brutal imagery and like slow-burn paranoia over tidy answers, it’s more likely to work for you.
