Phoenix Forgotten (2017)
Twenty years after three teenagers disappeared in the wake of mysterious lights appearing above Phoenix, Arizona, unseen footage from that night has been discovered, chronicling the final hours of their fateful expedition.
What people think about Phoenix Forgotten
Phoenix Forgotten feels like someone cracked open a time capsule from 1997 and found it still humming with dread—its greatest trick is how convincingly it sells the “recovered footage” illusion, right down to the grainy home-video texture and awkward, intimate teen banter that makes everything feel uncomfortably real. Instead of rushing to shocks, it builds a steady, investigative unease around the Phoenix Lights, letting small details and performances do the heavy lifting until the tension tightens like a wire. When it finally commits to full-on found-footage terror, the movie delivers a sharp, memorable climax that’s more about helpless awe than cheap gore. It’s not for viewers who dislike shaky-cam or slow-burn setups, but if you want a UFO mystery that earns its scares through atmosphere and execution, this one is easy to recommend.
Phoenix Forgotten is clearly trying to turn the real-life “Phoenix Lights” mystery into a grounded, found-footage descent into paranoia, and the setup has an appealing, eerie plausibility. The problem is it leans hard on familiar Blair Witch-style tricks—shaky-cam, lots of waiting around, and a slow drip of “did you hear that?” tension that can feel more repetitive than suspenseful. When it finally escalates, there are a few genuinely creepy moments and some effective sound design, but the overall ride may disappoint if you want fresh sci-fi ideas or a tightly paced horror payoff. If you’re patient with found footage and like UFO lore, you might get some mileage; if you’re allergic to clichés or motion-sickness camerawork, this probably isn’t your night.
