The White Tiger (2021)

Ramin Bahrani directs with propulsive energy and a keen eye for the contrasts of modern India, while the cinematography makes the world feel lived-in—glittering, grimy, and always in motion. At the center, Adarsh Gourav is a revelation: funny, furious, and magnetic enough to make you understand how charm can become a weapon, with Rajkummar Rao and Priyanka Chopra Jonas adding heat and complexity to the social pressure cooker around him. It’s darkly comic, morally bracing, and sometimes violent, so it’s not for viewers looking for comfort—but if you want a drama that feels urgent, sharply written, and impossible to shake, this one delivers.

The White Tiger is clearly aiming to be a sharp, darkly funny takedown of class inequality, told through one man’s ruthless climb out of poverty, and it often has the nerve and energy to make that premise land. Adarsh Gourav is the main reason to watch—he gives Balram a mix of charm and menace that keeps you leaning in, even when the story turns ugly. The problem is the film can feel overstuffed and uneven, rushing through big turns and leaning on voiceover and blunt dialogue where deeper character work would’ve made the moral mess hit harder. If you want a tightly paced drama with believable arcs and clean emotional payoffs, this may frustrate you; if you’re up for a jagged, provocative rise-and-fall tale with strong performances and some rough edges, it’s worth your time.
