Leigh Janiak keeps the scares energetic and the pacing sharp, using a thumping, era-perfect vibe and a suspenseful score to make every hallway and fluorescent-lit corner feel unsafe. The young cast sells the friendships and frayed loyalties with enough warmth that the carnage actually lands, and the world-building is rich with little details that make the town’s curse feel like history, not just exposition. Fair warning: it’s gleefully bloody and doesn’t pull punches, but if you want a fun, retro-tinged horror ride that hooks you for what comes next, this one earns its reputation.

Fear Street: 1994 wants to be a glossy, crowd-pleasing throwback slasher with a mystery hook and a big “small town curse” mythology to pull you into the larger trilogy. It delivers on blood, pacing, and a few fun set pieces, but a lot of it leans hard on familiar genre beats and 90s nostalgia rather than truly fresh scares or deep character work. The central relationship and teen ensemble can feel more functional than emotionally lived-in, which makes the heavier moments land unevenly.
