Haunt (2019)

Haunt takes a simple, irresistible Halloween dare—an “extreme” haunted house—and turns it into a tightly wound pressure cooker where every hallway feels like a trap and every door you open makes you regret your curiosity. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods keep the pacing lean and the atmosphere nasty in the best way, building sustained tension with creepy production design and a sense that the rules have been ripped up and thrown in the dark. It’s the kind of slasher-thriller that doesn’t need to reinvent the genre because it understands what you came for: clean, escalating scares, sharp jolts, and the sickening thrill of not knowing who’s behind the masks. Fair warning, it’s genuinely brutal and not for the squeamish, but if you want a scary, efficient ride that delivers on its premise, this one earns your pulse.

Haunt is aiming for a lean, no-nonsense “escape the attraction” horror ride, swapping supernatural tricks for human monsters and a steady escalation of traps, panic, and gore. It mostly delivers on tension and nasty set pieces, but don’t expect much originality—if you’ve seen a handful of modern “people are the real evil” thrillers, you’ll likely call the beats before they land. The characters are serviceable rather than deeply developed, so the movie works better as a pressure-cooker experience than a story you’ll think about afterward. If you want inventive mythology or clever twists, skip it; if you just want a tight, brutal Halloween-night survival flick with severe violence and a few satisfying payback moments, it’ll do the job.
