Knights of the Zodiac (2023)

Knights of the Zodiac is the kind of glossy, big-hearted fantasy-action ride that wears its anime-inspired sincerity on its sleeve, pairing scrappy martial-arts grit with bursts of cosmic spectacle that look terrific on a big screen. Mackenyu gives Seiya a restless, bruised determination that keeps the movie grounded even as it rockets into glowing armor, mythic destiny, and science-fiction tech villainy, and the fights have a clean, propulsive choreography that’s easy to follow and fun to feel. The vibe is earnest and energetic rather than gritty—more “comic-book myth” than realism—so if you’re allergic to chosen-one storytelling or want deep character nuance, it may not fully click. But if you’re on the fence and craving a PG-13 crowd-pleaser with slick effects, punchy action, and a straight-faced sense of wonder, this one delivers a solid, satisfying rush.

Knights of the Zodiac is clearly trying to launch a glossy, live-action origin story with anime-style mythology, chosen-one stakes, and a big “embrace your destiny” arc. The problem is the movie often feels like it’s speed-running its own worldbuilding: the plot is thin, the script is clunky, and key turns happen because the story needs them to, not because they’ve been earned. If you’re a Saint Seiya fan hoping for the spirit, charm, and emotional punch of the anime/manga, this may feel like a watered-down franchise starter that can’t decide whether it’s for newcomers or loyalists. On the plus side, the fights have occasional energy, the cast is game, and the PG-13 action spectacle might be enough if you just want a straightforward, effects-driven fantasy brawl without expecting much depth.
