The Quake (2018)
A geologist races against time to save his estranged wife and two children when a devastating earthquake strikes Oslo, Norway.
What people think about The Quake
The Quake is the kind of disaster thriller that earns its spectacle: it doesn’t just shake buildings, it rattles the people inside them, grounding every big moment in bruised family ties and a hero who can’t quite forgive himself. John Andreas Andersen stages Oslo’s unraveling with a craftsman’s eye—tense, clear, and surprisingly intimate—so the suspense comes as much from tight corridors and impossible choices as from collapsing concrete. Kristoffer Joner makes the panic feel personal, turning a familiar race-against-time setup into something with real emotional weight. If you want a glossy, quippy catastrophe ride, this may feel too serious, but if you’re on the fence and craving smart, efficient thrills with characters you actually worry about, it delivers.
The Quake is clearly aiming for a grounded, human-scale disaster thriller, using a fractured family and a very real-feeling Oslo setting to make the stakes personal rather than just noisy spectacle. When the earthquake finally hits, the destruction is tense and convincingly staged, with some genuinely unsettling injury imagery that earns the PG-13 warning. The problem is the road to get there: the first stretch is slow and a bit heavy-handed, and once the plot clicks into gear it leans hard on familiar disaster-movie beats you’ll see coming a mile away. If you want sharp surprises or deep character drama, this may feel formulaic, but if you’re happy to wait for well-made set pieces in a solid Scandinavian disaster film, it does deliver.
