Ghosts of War (2020)

Ghosts of War earns its keep by fusing two kinds of terror—battlefield tension and haunted-house dread—into one sweaty, candlelit ordeal that feels both familiar and intriguingly off-kilter. The film luxuriates in atmosphere: a captured French castle becomes a pressure cooker of creaking corridors, uneasy silences, and sudden shocks, while the soldiers at its center sell the fear with grounded, committed performances. It’s intense and entertaining in that old-fashioned “hold your breath and brace for it” way, building dread patiently before letting the jump scares land. If you want subtle, slow-burn art-horror, this may be too direct and jolty, but if you’re game for an unconventional war-tinged nightmare with a strong vibe, it’s a memorable watch.

Ghosts of War aims to mash WWII grit with a haunted-house siege, and for a while it actually works: the castle setting is creepy, the soldiers’ camaraderie is solid, and the early tension feels properly claustrophobic. The problem is it can’t decide what kind of movie it wants to be, so the scares start to feel thin and the story gets increasingly muddled as it reaches for bigger themes. By the time it hits the late-game revelations, the pacing turns rushed and the logic gets so convoluted that you may stop caring rather than feel shocked. If you’re here for clean supernatural horror or a grounded war thriller, this will likely frustrate you; if you’re tolerant of genre-blending weirdness and just want an atmospheric first half, you might still get some value out of it.
