Gilbert (2017)

Gilbert is special because it takes one of comedy’s loudest, most abrasive personas and gently reveals the thoughtful, oddly tender human being behind the squawk. Director Neil Berkeley follows Gottfried offstage—at home with his wife and kids, navigating family history, and moving through the comedy world with a workmanlike devotion that’s both funny and quietly moving—so the film feels less like a highlight reel and more like an intimate portrait. It doesn’t dodge the messy parts, either, looking squarely at the moments when his boundary-pushing instincts collided with public outrage, which makes the insight feel earned rather than flattering. If you’re allergic to crude comedy or TV-MA edges, it may not be your comfort zone, but if you’re even slightly curious about what fuels a singular comic voice, this is a fascinating, affectionate watch.

Gilbert is trying to peel back the squawking stage persona and show Gilbert Gottfried as a working comic, husband, and son, and it succeeds most when it catches him in quiet, unexpectedly tender moments. The catch is that it’s a small, observational documentary rather than a punchline machine, so if you’re expecting wall-to-wall jokes or a tidy, triumphant career arc, it can feel meandering and a bit inside-baseball. It also doesn’t shy away from the edges of his comedy and the fallout from controversies, which may be uncomfortable if you don’t have patience for boundary-pushing humor or the context around it. If you’re a fan curious about the human behind the voice, it’s worth your time; if you just want the greatest-hits version of Gottfried, you may leave underwhelmed.
