Dragged Across Concrete (2019)

Dragged Across Concrete is the kind of hardboiled crime thriller that feels carved out of granite: patient, grimly funny in places, and absolutely committed to taking its characters’ desperation seriously. S. Craig Zahler stages the story with a slow-burn confidence, letting the tension seep in through sharp, lived-in dialogue and a cityscape that looks like it’s been bruised by bad decisions. Mel Gibson brings weary, combustible gravity, while Vince Vaughn surprises with a grounded, melancholy edge that makes their partnership more than just a cop-movie pairing—it’s a pressure cooker. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and the moral terrain is deliberately ugly, but if you want a tough, meticulously crafted descent into the underworld that doesn’t blink, this one sticks with you.

Dragged Across Concrete is trying to be a grimy, old-school crime saga about two compromised cops and the ugly costs of chasing “fairness” in an unfair world, and it commits hard to that bleak, morally muddy tone. The problem is Zahler’s deliberately slow, talky pacing and hefty runtime can feel self-indulgent, with long stretches that play more like dour character essays than a taut thriller. When the violence arrives, it isn’t cathartic action-movie stuff—it’s graphic, lingering, and meant to leave you cold, and the film’s provocations around racism and police brutality may read as blunt or exploitative depending on your tolerance. If you like patient, punishing neo-noir with strong performances (especially Vaughn’s surprisingly restrained work) and don’t mind feeling unsettled, it might land; if you want momentum, likable leads, or any sense of uplift, you’ll probably regret the time.
