Monster Hunter (2020)

Monster Hunter is at its best when it stops trying to be anything other than a big, brisk creature-feature, and in that lane it’s gleefully confident: a no-nonsense plunge into a harsh new world where every horizon promises something with teeth. Paul W. S. Anderson stages the action with unusually clean visual geography, so you can actually savor the choreography—especially when Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa’s wary alliance turns survival into a kind of wordless, physical storytelling. The vibe is pulpy, loud, and efficiently paced, delivering monster battles as spectacle rather than mythmaking, with Ron Perlman adding a welcome shot of larger-than-life swagger. If you want deep lore or subtle character drama, this isn’t your hunt, but if you’re on the fence and craving a sharp, energetic fantasy-action romp that knows how to show you the fight, it’s an easy ticket.

Monster Hunter is clearly trying to be a lean, no-nonsense creature-slaying ride with videogame-style gear, big monsters, and a “survive the new world” hook, and when it commits to that, it can be enjoyably loud. The problem is the connective tissue: the story is thin, the dialogue is clunky, and the editing can make action feel choppy rather than thrilling, so you may end up waiting for the next cool monster instead of caring what’s happening. Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa have the physical presence to sell the fights, and there are a few solid set pieces, but it’s more “boss battles stitched together” than a satisfying adventure. If you want faithful world-building or characters you’ll actually miss when the credits roll, this probably isn’t for you; if you just want PG-13 monster mayhem and can forgive a muddled narrative, you might get enough value out of it.
