Clouds (2020)

Clouds is special because it treats a true, heartbreaking story not as a tearjerker machine, but as a celebration of what art can do when time is short: it turns fear into music and ordinary moments into something luminous. Justin Baldoni directs with a gentle, unforced compassion, letting the emotions arrive honestly through small gestures, family rhythms, and the way songs become a language for everything the characters can’t quite say. Fin Argus brings Zach to life with warmth and wit, while Sabrina Carpenter and Madison Iseman give the love and friendship around him real texture, so the film feels lived-in rather than “inspirational.” Fair warning: if you’re not in the mood for a story that looks cancer straight in the eye, it may be too heavy—but if you are, it’s the kind of movie that leaves you both wrung out and strangely grateful.

Clouds is clearly trying to honor a real teenager’s life by turning his final months into an uplifting, music-driven tearjerker about choosing joy and purpose when time is short. The problem is it often reaches for emotion the easy way—montage-y beats, familiar cancer-drama rhythms, and a script that introduces conflicts and relationships only to smooth them over before they can land with real complexity. If you’re allergic to earnest, inspirational storytelling that can feel engineered to make you cry, this may come off as manipulative or predictable rather than deeply moving. That said, the leads are sincere, the songs do some heavy lifting, and if you want a gentle, PG-13 catharsis with a hopeful tone, it can still hit.
