Five Feet Apart takes a familiar teen-romance setup and gives it a heartbeat by making love itself feel risky, measured in inches and breath, not grand speeches. Justin Baldoni keeps the tone tender and grounded, letting hospital routines, gallows humor, and stolen moments create a quiet intensity that sneaks up on you. Haley Lu Richardson is the film’s anchor—funny, fierce, and fragile in a way that feels lived-in—while her chemistry with Cole Sprouse turns flirtation into something genuinely poignant, helped by dialogue that sounds like real teenagers trying to be brave. It’s unabashedly emotional and will tug hard at anyone sensitive to illness stories, but if you’re on the fence and want a romance that earns its tears, this one delivers.

Five Feet Apart is clearly trying to package a serious, medically complicated reality into a tender, accessible teen romance about connection when touch is forbidden. The problem is it leans hard on familiar YA beats and “designed-to-make-you-cry” moments, so if you’re allergic to sentimental, slightly manipulative storytelling, you’ll see the emotional gears turning long before the film wants you to. It’s also fairly predictable, and the drama can feel softened into something glossy rather than truly messy or surprising. That said, Haley Lu Richardson brings real sincerity, the leads have enough chemistry to carry scenes, and if you want a safe, bittersweet cry with a clean PG-13 edge, it’ll do the job—just don’t go in expecting subtlety or a fresh take.
