The Erwin brothers keep the tone warm and accessible without sanding down the hard edges, and the film’s faith is presented less as a sales pitch than as a lived, messy journey toward grace. J. Michael Finley brings an open-hearted authenticity to Bart’s struggle, while Dennis Quaid gives the father a volatile humanity that makes the emotional turns land with surprising weight. It’s not for everyone—some scenes of domestic abuse and the overt Christian framework may be a hurdle—but if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of sincere, well-acted crowd-pleaser that leaves you feeling lighter without pretending the pain wasn’t real.

If you’re not already on board with overt Christian messaging, you may find it preachy and a little self-important, especially in how it treats art as a simple byproduct of testimony.
