Bill Pullman is terrific as a brilliant, self-destructive champion whose sharp wit and frayed nerves make the film feel human even as the stakes turn geopolitical, and the 1962 Warsaw setting is rendered with smoky, paranoid atmosphere and handsome period detail. The tone is classy and pulpy at once: part espionage cat-and-mouse, part character drama, with flashes of dark humor that keep it from sinking into gloom. It’s not for everyone if you want clean-cut heroes or a brisk, action-first pace, but if you like your thrillers moody, smart, and a little haunted, this one is easy to recommend.

If you’re hoping for sharp, coherent espionage tension or a truly cerebral chess film, this may frustrate you; if you just want a moody Cold War backdrop and can tolerate a messy plot, you might get enough out of it.
