The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019)

Armando Iannucci brings a buoyant, modern comic rhythm to the period trappings, and Dev Patel anchors the whole whirlwind with a performance that’s warm, witty, and quietly moving as David learns how to shape his life into a story worth telling. The film zips from absurdity to tenderness with the ease of a great storyteller, helped along by a terrific ensemble (Peter Capaldi in particular is a constant delight) and a visual playfulness that keeps it feeling fresh. If you prefer your literary adaptations solemn and reverent, this may feel a bit brisk and cheeky—but if you want a smart, genuinely entertaining crowd-pleaser with real humanity under the laughs, it’s an easy recommendation.

Armando Iannucci’s David Copperfield is clearly trying to make Dickens feel modern, fast, and joyfully theatrical, with color-blind casting and a punchy, joke-forward rhythm. The problem is it can feel like a brilliantly staged sprint through the story: characters and plot turns fly by so quickly that some of the tragedy and tenderness land lighter than they should, and the cleverness occasionally calls attention to itself. If you want a faithful, emotionally weighty Dickens with room to breathe, this may come off busy and a bit show-offy. But if you’re happy with a playful, high-energy literary remix powered by Dev Patel’s charm and a strong supporting cast (Capaldi especially), it’s an easy, good-natured watch.
