Blood Red Sky (2021)

Blood Red Sky takes a deliciously pulpy “plane hijacking” thriller and spikes it with a feral horror twist that feels both gleefully unhinged and oddly heartfelt. Peter Thorwarth keeps the cabin-cloistered tension tight and the action punchy, then lets the movie periodically bare its fangs with shocky, practical-feeling gore and a few bold left turns that keep you off balance in the best way. What really sells it, though, is the emotional engine: a mother’s desperate love for her son, battling to keep him safe while fighting the monster inside herself, gives the mayhem real stakes instead of empty splatter. Fair warning: it’s intense and very bloody, but if you like your genre movies fast, nasty, and surprisingly sincere, this one earns its altitude.

Blood Red Sky is clearly aiming for a pulpy “Die Hard on a plane” thriller with a horror twist, mixing maternal drama, hijacking tension, and full-on vampire brutality. The problem is it often feels like it’s fighting itself: the pacing lags between bursts of action, and the tone swings from earnest tragedy to splatter mayhem without always landing the balance. If you’re expecting a clever, playful escalation of its bonkers premise, you may find the execution surprisingly straightforward and occasionally messy. Still, Peri Baumeister commits hard, the confined setting creates some claustrophobic suspense, and if you can tolerate severe gore in exchange for a grim, emotional monster story, it may hit the spot.
