Giles Alderson keeps the film humming on tension and dread, cutting between present-day survival and a dark past that slowly sharpens the meaning behind the cruelty, so it plays like a mystery you can’t stop solving even as you want to look away. The practical effects and gore are unapologetically intense, but they’re deployed with purpose—fueling suspense and raising the stakes rather than just posing for shock value. This isn’t for the squeamish or anyone tired of sadistic horror, but if you like your thrillers mean, twisty, and relentlessly paced, it delivers a brutal kind of satisfaction.

The Dare is aiming for a nasty, revenge-fueled “escape the room” horror with a moral sting, using a dual-timeline backstory to explain how a monster gets made. The problem is it leans so hard into Saw-style cruelty that the mystery and character work often feel like excuses to queue up the next grisly set piece, and the script’s logic can wobble when it needs to connect the dots. If you’re not into prolonged torture, sadistic humiliation, and gore-as-the-main-course, this will feel more exhausting than scary. That said, Richard Brake brings real menace, and the film does try to give its brutality a thematic point, even if it doesn’t always land cleanly.
