Family (2018)

Family is one of those comedies that sneaks up on you: it looks like a fish-out-of-water gag machine, then quietly turns into a warm, surprisingly tender story about two people who don’t know how to ask for help. Taylor Schilling makes Kate’s hard edges funny without sanding them down, and the film lets her clash and click with Bryn Vale’s wonderfully specific, wounded-yet-defiant Maddie in ways that feel lived-in rather than sitcom-neat. The Juggalo backdrop gives the movie its oddball sparkle and a welcome streak of empathy for outsiders, while Brian Tyree Henry (and a scene-stealing Kate McKinnon) keep the vibe buoyant even when it brushes up against real loneliness. It’s raunchy in language and grown-up in attitude, so it won’t be for everyone, but if you like comedies with an actual heartbeat, this one earns its laughs and its sweetness.
