Boarding School (2018)

Boarding School is the kind of horror that sneaks in through character before it ever lunges for your throat: a gothic nightmare staged as a bruised coming-of-age story, where the scariest shadows often come from what these kids are carrying inside. Boaz Yakin turns the isolated mansion and its severe, sermon-soaked discipline into a pressure cooker, letting dread build with an almost literary patience until the film’s brutality feels pointed rather than random. Luke Prael anchors it with a raw, vulnerable performance that makes the mystery and madness land harder, and the movie’s willingness to grapple with identity, shame, and survival gives it a thoughtfulness you don’t always get in this genre. Fair warning, it’s intense and not shy about disturbing imagery—if you want a fun, breezy scare, look elsewhere—but if you’re on the fence for something darker, stranger, and more meaningful than the usual creepy-school setup, this one sticks with you.

Boarding School is clearly aiming for a nasty little fairy tale about outsider kids trapped in a puritanical nightmare, mixing coming-of-age trauma with mystery-horror shocks. The problem is the film’s big ideas don’t quite click into a satisfying whole, and the slow, moody pacing often drains tension instead of building it, so the scares can feel more like interruptions than payoffs. Performances vary (understandable with a young cast), but it also spotlights a script that leans on implausible turns and doesn’t always earn its twists. If you want tight suspense and clean storytelling, this will likely frustrate you; if you’re up for a grim, oddball atmosphere and don’t mind messiness in exchange for mood and a few memorable images, you might get something out of it.
