Calibre (2018)

Calibre is the kind of thriller that earns its dread the hard way: not through flashy twists, but through a slow, tightening grip where every choice feels like it costs something. Matt Palmer turns the Scottish Highlands into a beautiful trap, using crisp, unshowy camerawork and a relentless sense of proximity to make you feel the walls closing in alongside two lifelong friends whose bond is tested under unbearable pressure. Jack Lowden and Martin McCann are terrific, playing panic and denial with such lived-in realism that the film’s moral ambiguity lingers long after the credits. It’s not for viewers who want escapist fun or a gentle ride—this one is tense, profane, and emotionally bruising—but if you’re on the fence about a smart, sustained nerve-mangler, Calibre delivers.

Calibre is aiming for a tight, morally suffocating thriller about how one terrible mistake can turn two friends into strangers, and it largely succeeds at keeping the tension wound to breaking point. The downside is that the setup and some story beats can feel familiar if you’ve seen a few “cover-up gone wrong” dramas, so don’t expect a wildly original plot engine. It’s also an unrelentingly grim watch—lots of panic, guilt, and escalating dread, plus harsh language and sudden violence—so if you want catharsis or likable decision-making, look elsewhere. If you can handle a bleak, pressure-cooker film carried by strong performances and a hostile atmosphere, it’s effective; if you’re sensitive to animal harm or hate watching people make bad choices for 90 minutes, this will be a rough sit.
