Parava (2017)

Parava is special because it finds a whole universe inside a seemingly small obsession—pigeon flying—and uses it to paint a neighborhood with the kind of lived-in texture you can almost smell in the air. Soubin Shahir captures Mattancherry as more than a setting; it’s a heartbeat of friendships, rivalries, jokes, and quiet wounds, brought to life by wonderfully natural performances that make the boys’ bond feel effortless and true. The film moves with a warm, nostalgic vibe that gradually deepens into something more bruised and cathartic, without ever losing its affection for these characters. It’s not a slick, plot-driven drama, and the second half carries some intensity and rough edges, but if you’re willing to sink into its atmosphere, Parava rewards you with an honest, tender portrait of growing up and learning how to live with what breaks a community—and what can mend it.

The problem is it can’t quite decide whose story it wants to tell, so the playful teen track keeps getting sidelined by heavier adult tragedy, which makes the pacing feel lopsided and the focus drift. If you’re expecting a consistently youthful, light drama, the second half’s intensity and extended detours may test your patience, and the music can feel like it’s pushing emotions a bit too hard. Still, when it settles into everyday moments and community texture, it has a genuine sweetness and an affectionate sense of place that will work best for viewers who don’t mind a meandering, mood-first narrative.
