The Last Warrior (2017)

The Last Warrior is that rare family fantasy that feels both fresh and comfortably old-fashioned: it drops a modern-day hustler into a living storybook of Russian folklore and lets the culture clash spark real comedy, swashbuckling action, and a surprising amount of heart. Dmitriy Dyachenko’s film moves with the breezy confidence of a crowd-pleaser, pairing colorful creatures, magical set pieces, and an enjoyably epic score with jokes that land without turning cynical. What makes it special is how it treats heroism as something you earn, not something you inherit, giving the adventure a stirring undercurrent beneath all the spectacle. If you’re allergic to broad fantasy tropes or PG peril, it may not convert you—but if you want a fun, good-natured ride with genuine fairy-tale charm, this one delivers.

The Last Warrior is clearly trying to be a family-friendly, fish-out-of-water fantasy romp that mashes modern Moscow humor with classic Russian fairy-tale heroes, and on that level it’s breezy and easy to sit through. The problem is it often feels like a theme-park version of an epic: the plot is very basic, the tone can be oddly broad, and the acting and effects won’t convince anyone expecting Hollywood-level polish. If you don’t already have some affection for Slavic folklore (or you’re relying on a dub/sub that doesn’t land the jokes), a lot of it may come off flat or even confusing. Still, it has a few charming character pairings and a light, kid-safe pace, so it works best as a casual family watch rather than a fantasy adventure you take seriously.
