Caged (2021)

Caged is the kind of thriller that doesn’t just scare you—it traps you inside a mind under siege, turning a bare cell into a whole universe of dread. Edi Gathegi gives a fiercely committed performance as a man clinging to reason while the film’s hallucinatory imagery and tight, controlled style make every sound and shadow feel weaponized, especially with Melora Hardin’s chilling guard pressing the screws. Director Aaron Fjellman keeps the tension intimate and relentless, using claustrophobia as the engine so you feel the disorientation of solitary confinement rather than simply watching it. It’s a grim, psychologically punishing ride, so it won’t be for viewers looking for escapist horror—but if you want a tense, performance-driven descent that lingers, this one is worth stepping into.

Caged is clearly aiming for a claustrophobic, psychological descent into guilt, grief, and institutional cruelty, with solitary confinement used as the pressure cooker. The problem is it often leans on familiar prison-thriller beats and well-worn hallucination/flashback devices, so the “what’s real?” tension can feel more routine than truly unsettling. A few twists arrive like they’re supposed to land hard, but the setup is so recognizable that the surprises may not hit, and the final stretch loses some momentum. If you’re mainly here for a fresh, sharply written psychological horror, you might leave annoyed—but if you can tolerate clichés for a grim, contained character spiral and strong commitment from the leads, it can still scratch that itch.
