Standing Up, Falling Down (2020)

Standing Up, Falling Down is special because it finds real, lived-in tenderness in the space between a laugh and a wince, anchored by the kind of two-hander chemistry you can’t manufacture. Billy Crystal brings a bruised charisma and sly wit to Marty, while Ben Schwartz lets Scott’s nervous energy crack open into something more vulnerable, and together they make a familiar “back home” setup feel disarmingly human. The vibe is warm and rueful rather than sitcom-broad, with jokes that land because they’re tethered to regret, pride, and the slow work of forgiving yourself. It won’t be for viewers hunting big plot fireworks or nonstop punchlines, but if you like comedies that earn their heart without begging for it, this one sneaks up on you in the best way.

Standing Up, Falling Down clearly wants to be a gentle, character-driven dramedy about failure, second chances, and the strange comfort of finding a kindred spirit in the last person you’d expect. Still, Billy Crystal brings an easy charisma and Ben Schwartz is likable, so if you’re in the mood for low-key hangout vibes and small-scale healing, it can be a pleasant enough sit.
