37 Seconds (2019)

37 Seconds is special because it treats a young woman’s coming-of-age not as an “inspirational” story, but as a fully human one—messy, funny in places, and quietly brave. Director Hikari lets Yuma’s world open up with a gentle, observant camera, finding warmth and empathy in everyday moments as she pushes against the soft prison of other people’s good intentions. Mei Kayama gives a performance that feels lived-in and disarmingly authentic, making Yuma’s hunger for independence, creative credit, and adult intimacy feel immediate without ever turning the film into a lecture. The tone is tender but tough-minded, and while the sexual content may make it not for everyone, it’s handled with honesty and purpose—because the movie insists, simply and powerfully, that desire and self-determination belong to everyone.

37 Seconds is clearly aiming for something worthwhile: a grounded, compassionate coming-of-age story about disability, autonomy, and sexual self-determination, anchored by an affecting lead performance from Mei Kayama. Where it may lose you is in the pacing and shape of the journey—after a strong setup, the film can feel episodic and a bit unsure of how to build momentum, leaning into familiar “self-discovery” beats even when the perspective is refreshingly specific. It’s also frank about sexuality (including nudity and adult material), handled more matter-of-fact than titillating, but still potentially uncomfortable if you’re not up for that. If you want a tightly plotted drama with big narrative payoffs, this might feel slight; if you’re open to a quieter, character-led film that values empathy over propulsion, it’s an easy one to respect even when it meanders.
