Tom Harper stages the sky as both cathedral and battleground, and the film’s visuals—especially when the weather turns—are so vivid you can almost feel the cold bite through the basket. Felicity Jones brings daredevil fire and bruised tenderness to Amelia Wren, while Eddie Redmayne grounds the wonder with quiet, stubborn intelligence; together they have the sort of chemistry that makes the silences as compelling as the thrills. If you’re allergic to heightened, crowd-pleasing drama or a few narrative flourishes, it may not be your altitude—but if you want suspense, romance, and awe wrapped into one breathless ride, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

The Aeronauts wants to be a rousing, old-school survival adventure with a dash of romance, using a record-breaking balloon flight as its big cinematic hook. And to be fair, the visuals and aerial set pieces deliver real height-and-weather peril, with Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne doing solid work to sell the stakes. The problem is everything in between: the script leans on familiar inspirational beats, the pacing drifts, and the emotional backstory can feel manufactured rather than earned. If you’re picky about historical accuracy or you want a sharper, more science-forward drama, this may frustrate you; if you just want a handsome, tense ride in the clouds, it’ll do the job.
