Irreplaceable You (2018)
A stunning cancer diagnosis spurs Abbie to seek a future girlfriend for fiancé and childhood sweetheart Sam, who's clueless when it comes to dating.
What people think about Irreplaceable You
Irreplaceable You earns its title by leaning into the messy, funny, deeply human ways love tries to stay useful when life stops being fair. Stephanie Laing keeps the tone gently off-kilter—romantic and conversational, with little bursts of humor that don’t cheapen the tears—and Gugu Mbatha-Raw gives Abbie a bright, intelligent poise that makes her feel like someone you’ve actually known. The film’s premise could have been gimmicky, but it plays more like an intimate portrait of devotion, friendship, and the strange kindness of strangers, with Michiel Huisman and Steve Coogan grounding the emotion instead of pushing it. If you’re allergic to a good cry or wary of terminal-illness stories, it may feel too direct, but for viewers open to a heartfelt, charming love story, it can be quietly affecting in the best way.
Irreplaceable You is clearly aiming for a modern tearjerker about love, letting go, and trying to “solve” grief before it arrives, and you can feel the sincerity in that intention. The problem is it often plays like a carefully engineered checklist of quirky side characters and pre-packaged emotional beats, with dialogue that can sound more like a script trying to be comforting than people actually talking. The tonal mix of rom-com banter and terminal-illness tragedy doesn’t always gel, so it may leave you feeling manipulated rather than moved. If you’re sensitive to glib handling of cancer or you want something raw and believable, this probably isn’t your film—but if you mainly want a soft, glossy cry with likable leads (especially Gugu Mbatha-Raw doing her best), you may still find it watchable.
