Brothers in Arms is special because it doesn’t just celebrate Platoon’s legacy—it takes you into the mud, sweat, and nerve-fraying uncertainty of how that legacy was forged, through the voices of the people who lived it. With Charlie Sheen guiding the journey, the cast and crew recount a grueling boot camp, Oliver Stone’s famously intense methods, and punishing conditions that turned a scrappy, low-budget shoot into something like a rite of passage. The tone is raw, intimate, and unexpectedly moving, less a glossy behind-the-scenes featurette than a hard-earned reunion where old bonds and old ghosts still feel close. If you want a clean, nostalgic victory lap, this may be too unvarnished—but if you’re curious how art gets made when comfort is stripped away, it’s riveting.

Brothers in Arms (2018) is clearly trying to bottle the legend of Platoon by letting the cast and crew relive the boot camp, the hardship, and the bond that came out the other side, with Charlie Sheen guiding you through it. The problem is the documentary often feels as punishing as the stories it tells: lots of straightforward talking heads and familiar archival clips, delivered in a macho, endurance-test tone that can turn grueling into tedious. If you’re hoping for fresh filmmaking, a broader cultural lens, or anything beyond “we suffered and it made us brothers,” this may feel dull and unimaginative. But if you’re already a Platoon devotee and you mainly want firsthand war-stories about Oliver Stone’s set and the actors’ shared ordeal, it does provide that camaraderie and behind-the-scenes texture.
